Where the Streets Nave No Name

The City of Toronto voted to rename Dundas Street due to namesake Henry Dundas’s connection to the slave trade. Total cost is expected to be $5-6 million. Words and symbols matter, but what use are performative gestures when systemic issues keep many Torontonians in dire straits?

I think it’s unlikely this petition to rename the street after Rob Ford will be successful… that would be the equivalent of Canada’s Boaty McBoatface, only less cute.

But seriously, what about investing in humane, dignified &/or trauma-informed approaches to affordable housing, mental health support, food security, etc. You know, stuff that will improve people’s material conditions.
