Massive Drug Bust

Hearty congratulations to Behchoko @RCMPNT, whose diligent officers seized a “considerable quantity” of “pre-packaged” illegal cannabis... which translates to ~90 grams of weed & shake in Ziplock bags

There’s a disconnect between enforcement & penalties vs actual harm caused.

Meanwhile, legal producer Organigram just admitted that cooling towers atop its cannabis production plant in Moncton caused a legionnaires' disease outbreak in the city, which affected 16 people last year. The company’s name had previously been redacted from public health docs.

It’s interesting to see who the state goes out of its way to protect (*ahem* corporations), compared to those who bear the brunt of harsh consequences. Doubly so considering corporate-level crime is likelier to cause harm.

Street dealers don’t spread pneumonia and lie about it.

Uncover $77 worth of illegal cannabis hidden behind fake walls? Shuffle the company leadership and keep it moving.

Intercept two shipments of an “unfathomable quantity” of cannabis bound for licensed producers? Keep it quiet to protect their stock price.

80 grams of “illicit” weed and baggies? GO. TO. JAIL.

Bottom line is that licensed companies and individuals are treated very differently when it comes to cannabis laws in Canada. IMHO we should scrap the vestiges of criminal law that inform offences and penalties for individuals. Cops can’t seem to be trusted with discretion.
